Champion Traits – Courage… A little courage goes a long way
I believe that it takes courage to play great golf. A golfer needs to learn to hit the ball without fear if he is going to be the best golfer he can be.
Removing fear can be difficult. To hit the ball without fear of the consequences requires trust in yourself and some practice.
Let me give you an example.
You learn to automate your golf game and are ready to take your natural and instinctive game out on to the golf course. Is this an easy thing to do?
I don’t think it is. Fear and self-doubt will likely kick in before you hit that first shot. You’ll feel uncomfortable and will want to ease the pressure and doubt by inflicting manual control.
But manual control is a sure swing wrecker. Thinking too much about your game NEVER allows you to master your swing or the game of golf. So you need to relax and let the subconscious perform the task at hand.
This is were some courage is required. You must trust that your subconscious is capable of performing the swing on the first tee perfectly and then every shot after that. The more pressure you feel…the more you must let go and strive for automation. This is not easy to do, but if done, you will be rewarded with a golf game that gives you consistency and better shots than you’d ever think possible.
The courage to let go and hit the ball without fear is not an easy thing to do. It requires some practice and discipline. Better still it cannot be bought, borrowed or stolen. You have to earn it. Further, you are likely to make some mistakes along the way. There is no easy way to learn to play courageously… but doing so could be the greatest gift any golfer could learn.
One of my favourite sayings in golf is “scars are always found on champions but rarely on cowards”. You may get a little bruised and battered on your quest for mastery but the effort is well worth it.
Courage and an automatic golf game are worth more than any quick fix or tip can offer. It will last you a lifetime and allow you to express your real golfing talent time after time.
