Building a Golf Swing

This question comes from regular Tribe member Grayden:

Question for your Cameron: I’ve learned a new skill this week – swinging the “club throw” way. I learned it by (on the practice ground) paying conscious attention to trying to throw a club straight, by paying conscious attention to how this “felt” when it finally went straight. Can you give some comments on the exact process you would follow to now put this modified swing into the auto process? eg not sure if I need to keep CONSCIOUSLY practicing it for a while or should my system have “got it” already and I can just resume normal auto golf confident that my body has the idea “locked in”? The events of the last couple of weeks have made me realize that this is still a bit of a grey area of understanding for me.

Knowing how to practice is as important as know the what. One without the other is virtually useless. Here are my thoughts on getting the most out of practice sessions and ensuring all skills are learned to the automatic level.

If you’ve been paying close attention to my latest golf lesson then you’re going to enjoy today’s lesson.

This golf lesson takes the club throwing drill to the next level. In fact, it really helps you understand the mechanics of the golf swing and clears up any misconceptions you may have. If you can get a grasp of the following key points I know you’ll make some significant improvement.

Regular Tribers Grayden and Steady have been doing well. This is your chance to take your golf swing level up a notch or two.

The following videos are particularly helpful if you’ve been having these problems:

  • A slice ball
  • Lacking power
  • Confusion about what to work on with your golf swing
  • An inconsistent golf swing

To be honest I haven’t really seen any golf coach making the golf swing as simple and as effective as these drills do. If you’ve tried the club throwing drill and liked it, then the following videos are a must watch.

This lesson is a follow up from the previous lesson on the golf stance. If you haven’t seen it now is a good time to check it out.

I can’t begin to tell you how important this lesson is. Many mistake the role of automatic golf and end up playing too quickly. This lesson is good because it uses a real life case study. I have done a voice over of a video that Grayden has sent through. Please watch the video to see a very common mistake with your stance, and more importantly how to fix it.

This lesson is important. So much of golf stance usually has to do with alignment, posture and ball position. While these can be important if the golfer gets them horribly wrong, for the most part they are little more than a side issue.

Why?

Because I have found that golfer’s posture, ball position and alignment is usually OK. If you let your instincts take over, this part of your golf swing will be in the ball park. But there is an issue that needs addressing (pardon the pun) and is something that is usually neglected.

I remember when I was struggling with my game. A part of golf technique that I found really confusing was the golf grip.

There was debate about how many knuckles could be seen. Was an interlocking or overlapping grip better? How hard does one need to hold? These questions caused self-doubt and kept my mind spinning. The end result was a fidgety and uncomfortable hold on the club.

So what is the right way to hold the club?

I don’t think there is any right or wrong way. The perfect grip for me is unlikely to suit you. But there is one thing you need to understand if you’re grip is going to allow you to play your best golf.

And that is speed.

If your grip doesn’t allow you to swing the golf club quickly then change. This is not negotiable. Speed is the essential element for gripping the club – far more important than anything else you’ve tried in the past.

Gripping the club correctly for speed

Rather than writing a super long post I thought it would be better to put a video together. In time I might add some images too!
